Crafting GENPEI: The Process and Techniques Leading to Its Birth
木地をつくる
Crafting the Material
商品とその部材に応じて長さ、幅、厚さを決め揃えて製材。曲げ加工をする気取り板は、両端を薄く加工（はぎ取り）しておく。一晩水に浸し、翌日約80度の湯で気取り板を煮沸する。煮沸した湯から出した板は、ゴロ（型）に合わせて曲げた後、木ばさみで留め、約7〜10日かけて乾燥させ、その後接着。
曲げ加工、接着の済んだ部材に、木目を見ながら底板を入れる。やすりがけや、浮造り仕上げを施し、木地が完成。
The lumber is prepared by tailoring the length, width, and thickness to suit the product and its components. The bending workpiece, a thin board for bending, is delicately trimmed at both ends. After soaking overnight in water, the bending workpiece is boiled in water the next day at approximately 80 degrees Celsius. The board, taken out of the boiling water, is bent to fit a GORO(the mold), secured with wooden clips, and left to dry for about 7 to 10 days before the adhesive process. Once the bending and adhesive processes are complete, the bottom board is inserted into the material while considering the wood grain. After sanding and applying a raised finish, the wood material is now ready.

塗装前、木地を軽く研磨する。
呂色仕上げの透明色漆、もしくは生漆を木地に塗り込み、布で拭き取る。研磨した木地に漆を塗り込んだ後、拭き取り用の紙で拭き取る。漆の塗り込み、拭き取りは5回繰り返す。
塗装を終えた製品は、毎回室（ムロ）にて乾燥。最後の塗りを終えたら、約1ヶ月乾燥させる。
Before painting, the wood material is lightly sanded. A transparent color lacquer with a ROIRO finish or raw lacquer is applied to the wood, and then wiped off with a cloth. After applying lacquer to the sanded wood, it is wiped off with wiping paper. The lacquer application and wiping process is repeated five times. Once the painting is complete, the finished product is left to dry in a room called MURO. After the final coat, it must be allowed approximately one month for drying.

漆を乾燥させるため、製作途中の漆器を入れるための大きな木箱。別名に風呂（ふろ）。室の内側は霧吹きで湿気を含ませ、漆の乾燥に適した、一定の温度と湿度を保つようにして使います。
A lacquer drying chamber is a large wooden box used to dry lacquerware. Another name for this chamber is Furo. The inside of the chamber is moistened with a mist to maintain a constant temperature and humidity, which is ideal for drying lacquer.
